What makes a letter nonmachinable
- Aspect ratio (length ÷ height) below 1.3 or above 2.5 — square pieces, for instance
- An exterior surface not made of paper
- Clasps, strings, buttons or similar closures
- Pens, pencils, loose keys or coins that make the thickness uneven
- Too rigid to bend on a transport belt
- Polybagged, polywrapped or unevenly thick
Designing to stay in the cheaper tier
- Keep it letter size
- Avoid square designs
- Rectangular only — no rounded corners or die-cut shapes
- Keep the folded edge at the bottom
- Keep the return address out of the OCR read area
- No copy in the barcode clear zone
